John Ashby retirement

After two years’ honourable service and 42 years in the transport industry we are delighted to wish John a happy retirement. He has offered to come back to support us with phone campaigns when we run more CSO Workshops, so we do hope you will hear more from him. He has been a pleasure to work with and although missed we wish him the best.

CSO Phone call feedback

With John Ashby’s retirement we have been joined by Josh Chilman and James Bolton who have been calling you to listen to your ideas and feedback. We know time is precious, but this feedback is helping shape how we develop, just a few comments:

  • Our information is presented with no political agenda and reports are easy to read
  • Can we have a crime report ‘post to all crime reporting centres’ button?
  • Larger variety of report generation options (pie chart etc), with easy export facility
  • Concern over weapons swapping in the Indian Ocean

When we have a better feel (another month or so) we will consolidate all the findings for you.

Updated Groups

Creating a formidable library of easily accessed and relevant CSO knowledge is a key. Your feedback was that it was too complex so we now have three new group categories:

1.               CSO Groups

Here you will find 13 groups that are of general interest, ranging from stowaways to non-lethal equipment, cyber, port crime working group, legal etc

2.               Intelligence Groups

Here we are developing information feeds on Asia, Indian Ocean and West Africa from credible suppliers. We are working to secure Mediterranean information.
As we are a community of over 430 CSOs we have all the military reporting centres’ watch keepers online, hosting groups for MDAT-GoG, EUNAVFOR, NATO, UKMTO, CMF Bahrain and IFC Singapore. This ensures we can communicate on any issue or incident, sharing the feedback with the member CSO community in real time.

3.               Regulation and Insurance Groups

This is where you wanted to access industry support organisations. We have the security teams of BIMCO and North P&I available, and as we develop new partnerships this will become a useful reference point. It is agreed there is no competitive advantage in security, it is our seafarers we are dedicated to protecting.

Indian Ocean: A simple and automated weapons/end user certificate checking

As reported in the last news letter in the Athens meeting there was significant concern about the risks for Masters, CSOs and owners of embarking weapons that did not match the actual weapon owner end user certificate. We have no agenda except to act on behalf of our members to ensure that any delivery is credible, serves a whole market need, is easy to use and ideally at little to no cost.

The partners who are investing are veterans of the sector with intimate knowledge of PMSC and Floating Armoury weapon management systems. A beta version will be ready at the end of next week and we will keep you updated on progress.
